I attended a similar workshop with McStay several years ago in Holy Cross Benedictine Monastery in Rostrevor, and found it fascinating and insightful. The advent season is a perfect time to explore how we can all slow down and savour scripture in the way that this method of reading encourages us to do. As McStay writes:
As the season of Advent approaches, our thoughts turn towards the mystery of the Virgin Birth. In this deep, dark month, we await the dawning of a New Light, a New Way. ‘Weaving the Word’ gives you the opportunity to consider parallels between this season and your own life. And with new insights through God’s love, you can enjoy and renew your life.
McStay has provided further information about the retreat:
‘WEAVING THE WORD’
This one day retreat workshop is designed to give you the opportunity to step aside from the demands of day to day and to reflect on the significance of The Word in and for your inner growth and prayer life.
The ancient Christian practice of ‘Lectio Divina’ or ‘Sacred Reading’ is a rich and intimate prayer form. The techniques for Lectio Divina are simple. The rewards for your efforts are great as you grow in the art of Lectio.
On the day you will:
- look at the techniques which have been handed down through the ages;
- learn the simple steps for distinguishing The Word spoken to you;
- develop mindfulness;
- interpret its meaning for your personal circumstances;
- be empowered to pray for the courage to answer the call
of that Word.
