The Re-Emergence, and the Insurrection, Start Tonight …

image The conference, ‘Re-Emergence: Christianity and the Event of God,’ begins tonight, 15 March 2010, at 8 p.m. in McHugh’s Bar in Belfast. Tonight’s event is also the launch of the ‘Insurrection’ tour.

The conference runs until Thursday morning at the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College Dublin at Belfast. Organised by post-modern theologian and ‘insurrectionist’ Peter Rollins, it features notables such as Phyllis Tickle, Dave Tomlinson, Samir Selmanovic, and others.

The conference itself is fully subscribed but all are welcome to tonight’s Insurrection and the St Patrick’s gig tomorrow evening in the Black Box (a small donation/cover charge will apply).

In anticipation of the conference, I’ve reviewed some of the major books by the conference speakers, including:

Tickle’s The Great Emergence

Tomlinson’s Re-Enchanting Christianity

Selmanovic’s It’s All About God

Rollins’ The Orthodox Heretic

Rollins’ The Fidelity of Betrayal

Rollins’ How (Not) to Speak of God

I’ll leave you with Peter’s invitation to the Insurrection:

Rather we must call a new army of agitators into being. Dissidents courageous enough to return to the event that gave birth to the early church. A new breed of individuals brave enough to turn back so as to advance.

Through a provocative cocktail of incendiary theology, haunting soundscapes and musical lament Peter and friends will offer an invitation to set forth on this perilous return. A return that will strip everything from us, incinerate everything we hold dear and inaugurate a new year zero.

In short, this Easter Peter and friends set out to remind us that belief in the event of Resurrection means nothing less than participation in an Insurrection.

Warning… this tour involves the use of strong language and ideas that may be unsuitable for those easily offended

See you there?
